Create a 5-minute performance video showcasing your musical abilities.
- Size: Video entries must be 3-5 minutes.
- Format: Videos from digital cameras, camcorders, computers, and phones are all acceptable. Must be submitted as playback or downloadable URL links.
- Repertoire: You may perform with or without accompaniment, even for works that are typically accompanied. Repertoire may include complete works, movements or sections from larger pieces, or orchestral excerpts.
- Creativity: The exploration of creative ways to present or accompany your performance is encouraged but not required.
- Singers: If singing without accompaniment, vocalists may use any source of pitch (such as a keyboard or tuner) to get their starting pitch, both in the beginning of the piece and after significant rests.
- Composers: In lieu of a performance video submission, composers may submit scores to two different works in PDF format. Alternatively, a 3-5 minute recording (audio or video) of a performance of one composition OR a MIDI file from Finale, Sibelius, Musescore, or other music notation software if no performance has been recorded, will also be accepted.
Respond to the following two prompts.
Respond creatively. Responses may be in any of the following formats, and do not need to be the same for both submissions:
- Short written essay (250 words or less)
- Video (3 minutes or less)
- Audio (3 minutes or less)
- Visual art (10 or fewer images)
- Prompt 1: Describe one idea that would bring music into your community through either online or socially distanced methods of performing. We are particularly interested in submissions that align with the mission of VIVO - to build community through world class musical performance - and that would improve our community through creativity and innovation.
- Prompt 2: How would receiving this grant impact your future musical education?

Further Information
- Up to three applicants will be selected to receive $500 grants.
- Grants are intended to support the recipient's musical education during the current academic year. Examples of appropriate use include funding lessons, purchase of needed equipment, or paying tuition for music-focused online or socially distanced classes outside of school. After being chosen as a recipient, students must state their intended use for the funds in order to receive the grant.
- One or more finalists may be invited to collaborate with VIVO to execute their proposed idea for bringing music into their community through either online or socially distanced performances (creative response prompt 1). If selected, collaborating students would not be paid beyond the grant already received. However, VIVO will mobilize institutional resources and experience to support the project and work collaboratively with the student to realize their vision.
- Grant recipients will be selected by a panel composed of the VIVO leadership team, VIVO guest musicians, and outside representatives from partner organizations.
- There will be two steps to the evaluation process. After an initial consideration period, a flexible number of semi-finalists will be selected for full panel review. All semi-finalists will be provided personalized feedback from the panel regarding their submissions.
- The panel will review both the performance video and creative responses, weighing both elements equally.
- Final awards will be given in consideration of both artistic merit and innovative thinking, and support submissions that promote the values of diversity and inclusivity. VIVO is particularly interested in awarding grants to applicants that can clearly demonstrate how such an award would impact their future musical studies.
